BirdieMakers was started by a couple of golfing buddies that believed they could coordinate a fun golf weekend for a group of avid golfers without the fuss & muss.  When they decided to break away from other golf groups they took the things they enjoyed from other golf outings and expanded on those ideas. They designed a weekend full of games, skills challenges, a little bit of drinking, and a whole lot of fun, craziness, and one or two good golf shots! The success the club was going to have was evident from the very first outing.

In 2004, with 6 other golfers in tow, they chose Caverns Country Club in Luray, VA as their first venue. The following year, most of the same crazy golfers went back to Luray Caverns, but the group expanded with two new people joining. In 2006, they changed venues and traveled to Penn National near Mont Alto, PA. Now with 12 golfaholics strong, things really started to take off. The reception at Penn National was so great from day one; the club has decided to call Penn National the venue of choice. On the weekend after Labor Day, the club travels to Pennsylvania on Thursday afternoon for a full 108 holes of golf. An 18-hole getaway round is played on Thursday in Maryland, with the most recent being at Worthington Manor in Urbana, former home to a US Open Qualifying Round.  On Friday and Saturday the club enjoys 36 holes each day with back-to-back rounds on Penn National’s Iron Forge and Founders courses. A closing 18 holes is played on Sunday before returning home.

Some of the games we play:

·         4 man teams, 1-2-3  format

o   One ball net hole 1

o   Two balls net hole 2

o   Three balls net hole 3

o   Start over one ball net hole 4, two balls net hole 5, and so on until done

·         4 man teams best ball net full handicaps-

o   All Par 3’s 3 best net scores count

o   All Par 4’s 2 best net scores count

o   All Par 5’s 1 best net score count

·         Pink Ball Tournament

o   4 man teams – Keep 2 scores

o   One Score for Pink Ball and One Score for 2 BB (best balls)

o   On first tee you must determine order for playing Pink Ball (holes 1-18)

§  Player 1 plays Pink Ball until holed

§  The other three will play a net two best balls of three until holed

o   On next tee box the player 2 will play the Pink Ball and the other three will play the net 2 of 3

o   If you lose all three balls, you will be penalized 10 stokes; however you continue “Pink ball format” with any ball available

·         Stable ford or PGA Points – Individual

o   Quota - subtract handicap from 36 that is your quota to make to get to 0

o   Example: Your handicap is 22

§  Subtract it from 36 to get 14 quota points

§  You need to make 14 points to get to 0

§  Any over is plus (good), any under will be a minus (bad)!!!

o   Points are based on gross score per hole:

§  Triple Bogie, pick up -1 point

§  Double Bogie no points

§  Bogie 1 point

§  Par 2 points

§  Birdie 4 points

§  Eagle 8 points

§  Albatross (double eagle) 12 points

·         Each round we have contests for:

o   Closest to pin on Par 3’s

o   Long First Putt

o   Longest Drive (one each front 9 and back 9)

·         Crazy Hat Day

o   During the closing round everyone is encouraged to wear a crazy hat. The group votes for the “craziest” and the winner receives a prize.
